Jake is a walking encyclopedia and his specialty is gravity. However, when blamed for breaking his Mum’s favourite vase, he comes to the conclusion that gravity isn’t his friend anymore. So he builds himself a gravity switch so he can turn gravity off. Life seems so much more fun when you can float, but when Jake finds himself drifting alone through the darkest corners of the universe he realises that perhaps he has made a mistake. Being connected to things is actually pretty important.

On Saturday 10 November at the Convention Centre, Dublin, Wide Open Music and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, with the support of the Arts Council and local authorities in Carlow, Meath, Offaly, South Dublin, Westmeath and Wicklow, present the first performances in Dublin of Rain Falling Up, the musical whirlwind telling the story of just what really happens when Jake, the little boy who “knew things”, tries to turn gravity off. Young and old unite in this zany, visual “oratorio for children and gravity defying adults”, described as “astonishing…captivating…inspiring” by BBC Sounds Classical Magazine at its world premiere in Belfast in 2010.

Actress and writer Pauline McLynn narrates the performances involving a big-screen animation, children and older people drawn from Carlow, Meath, Offaly, South Dublin, Westmeath and Wicklow and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. Fergus Sheil conducts.

Brian Irvine’s music has been described by the Washington Post as “a kinetic, freewheeling circus making up some of the most exhilarating music you will ever hope to hear…exuberant, spontaneous, and irresistibly alive”.
