Two thrilling 20th-century masterpieces transport us from the excitement of the New World to the wonders of outer space. Combining classical music and jazz, Gershwin’s thrilling “musical kaleidoscope of America” Rhapsody in Blue is an exhilarating hymnal to the home of the skyscraper. Boasting rapturous writing for solo piano – with Philip Martin making a welcome return – it perfectly complements a choice selection of classic American songs. Holst’s The Planets, programmed to complement ESOF 2012 taking place in Dublin from 11–15 July as part of Dublin City of Science 2012, offers magical adventure and celestial poetry in abundance in unforgettable portraits of our nearest planetary neighbours.
