Since the early days of celluloid, science and cinema have shared an interesting relationship, culminating in imaginative and entertaining works such as Georges Melies’ La Voyage dans la Lune (1902) and Jacques Tati’s M. Hulot’s Holiday (1953). Avant-Garde Science explores the influence of these pioneers in motion pictures on contemporary science films with very special guest scientist and film-maker Prof. Luis Nieto. Born in Columbia in 1971, his work is influenced by the Latin-American philosopher Francisco Flores. Prof Nieto studied Physics and Mathematics in Bogota, before moving for a short period to the Theology Department, after which he specialised in animal physiology at the Academy of Surgery and Medicine.

Prof. Nieto’s passion for video has never left him and he continues to film all his experiences and experiments. In 2009, he co-directed with the primatologist Prof. Shibuya, an experimental protocol on animal communication in Japan. Together, they taught the cinematographic language to a monkey named “Capucine”. This successful process led to Capucine getting the title of the first monkey film-maker in the world (http://www.capucine-lefilm.com/).

For his Irish premier, Prof. Nieto has something very special planned for Dublin. Expect the unexpected from this unique evening where science and the surreal become happy bedfellows!

Also on the line-up for Avant-Garde Science at The Sugar Club is Léon McCarthy. Léon, a digital and performance artist, is a lecturer at the University of Limerick and currently studying towards a PhD at Northumbria and Newcastle Universities. His performances are designed to interrogate specific concerns and questions about the nature of live performance. Following recent performances in Italy and the UK, betav#03 – Poignant, Relentless, Relief is a series of live audiovisual performances that pose fresh perspectives on social and environmental issues. For UCD Imagine Science, betav#03 shines a performance light on the collective challenge to maintain healthy fish stocks so that we can in turn, continue to maintain healthy humans into the future!

Join us in The Sugar Club for sci-tastic performances, special guest DJ’s and cocktails worthy of any lab!
