The lecture presents a neglected aspect of Dublin’s cultural history, the popularisation of science among the general public during the Victorian era. Dubliners became, in the words of one observer, “all agog for science” through highly extravagant exhibitions, scientific displays and public lectures. For Dubliners, a weekend trip to a museum or lecture-hall became a mark of and index of civilisation and sophistication.
In celebrating Dublin City of Science 2012, Dublin City Public Libraries are hosting a number of events during Bealtaine Festival under the heading “Science All Around us” which are all free. For more information on the programme check out www.dublincitypubliclibraries.ie
