A simple white pillow embellished with thousands of sewing pins explores the potential for certain domestic objects to symbolically change.
Pathophysiology is an exhibition of new work by Paula Bourke-Girgis exploring the symbolism of materials and the residual energy of materiality by incorporating electronics, delicate needlework and ambitious sculptural objects. The inspiration behind the exhibition comes from a psychoanalytic ambition by the artist to understand how the mind affects the body and the body affects the mind. Paula sources material from her own personal history as a point of reference for the show.
“Pathophysiology is the study of the disruption of normal physiological processes and changes. I am interested in the potential of certain domestic objects to change. Some become sentimental, while others are perceived as repulsive, in the context of the life experience of the individual. I am curious about how we respond to these objects as an indication of how we relate to one another and how we see ourselves”, Paula explains.
