The series of three workshops, to celebrate Dublin City of Science 2012, kicked off on the 28th April with Thinking scientifically, the 1st workshop with Brendan Sayers from the National Botanic Gardens presenting a short introductory talk about the basis of scientific thinking. During the talk, the participants discussed their own art practice which was followed by moving into the garden to observe and engage the drawing eye in a collaborative and relaxed atmosphere.
All three workshops encourage the exchange between the two disciplines of Art and Science and foster creative ‘ways of seeing’ as well as exploring the intricate and rich biodiversity that exists in the National Botanic Gardens.
The second workshop Exploring Patterns in Nature will take place on the 26th May and will look at the basis of scientific thinking in relation to Phi: The Golden Ratio, as it relates to the phyllotaxis (the placement of leaves on a stem); the concept of phyllotaxis, and how Fibonacci number sequences are found in plant, leaf placement, tracing the related observations of artist and botanists through the ages (including Leonardo da Vinci), showing relevant diagrams and drawings. The group will again explore the gardens to do warm-up drawing exercises that help the artists to closely observe their subject and engage their drawing eye.
