STAGE – Scientists, Technologists and Artists Generating Exploration – housed at the California NanoSystems Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara, runs every two years and aims to identify the best new play about science and technology worldwide. STAGE comes to Dublin as a result of the efforts of CRANN, working in collaboration with Nancy Kalawek, Director of STAGE.
Ear to the Edge of Time, by Australian playwright Alana Valentine, is the winner of the 2012 STAGE International Script Competition. The play will be performed as a staged reading at Trinity College Dublin’s Samuel Beckett Theatre on the 21st of October 2012.

Ms Valentines script was chosen from over 200 entries from a dozen different countries by a distinguished panel of judges including Dr. Robert C. Richardson and Dr. Frank Wilczek, Nobel Laureates in Physics; Tony Kushner, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Tony Awards, Olivier Award and Emmy Award among others; David Lindsay Abaire, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Dr David Wineland, winner of the USA Benjamin Franklin medal and National Medal of Science and Donald Margulies, Pulitzer Prize and Obie Award Winning playwright. The top honour is coveted among playwrights for the prestige and opportunities it brings, as well as for its sizeable $10,000 prize.
The staged reading will be performed by professional Irish actors on Sunday, the 21st of October in the Samuel Beckett Theatre in Trinity College. The prize will be awarded to Ms Valentine on the night by Nancy Kalawek and a distinguished member of the judging committee.

Copenhagen by Michael Frayn (rehearsed reading directed by Lynne Parker)

In the autumn of 1941, at a critical point in the second world war, German physicist Werner Heisenberg paid a strange visit to his Danish counterpart, Niels Bohr. To this day, speculation has raged over precisely what they discussed. These two former friends were among a handful of scientists around the globe who could unlock the secret of nuclear warfare.

In probing the mystery of this meeting, Michael Frayn has created an extraordinary play – gripping, haunting, exhilarating and moving – which asks how we can ever know why we do what we do. The scientific and ethical issues raised in the reading will be disucssed in a panel discussion following the performance.

Belle Moral – A Natural History by Ann-Marie Macdonald, a rehearsed reading directed by Maureen White and Ronan Phelan, is an intriguing dark comedy set in a Scottish manor house by the sea at the end of the nineteenth century.

After her father’s death, Pearl MacIsaac is pursuing her scientific studies inspired by Darwin’s theories of evolution. A family secret is unearthed and everywhere there is the pull of opposites science vs nature, rational vs supernatural, conscious and unconscious. Belle Moral attempts to reconcile the extremes of rationalism and romanticism and questions the morality of the science of eugenics, which will be discussed by a panel following the event.

JULY 8th SMOCK ALLEY THEATRE: Exploring Bioethics, IVF & Saviour Siblings through theatre.

A reading of award-winning playwright Paul Meade’s new play, directed by Fishamble Theatre’s Jim Culleton. “Begotten Not Made” was originally commissioned by the Irish Council for Bioethics and explores a number of issues such as IVF, saviour siblings and assisted suicide in a thought-provoking and entertaining manner.

Begotten Not Made deals with three bioethical issues in their most human form, in three interwoven strands: The first strand tells the story of Gavin and Louisa who are struggling to conceive a child via IVF. Having exhausted all legal options, the couple must decide how far they are willing to go to have a baby. In the second, we meet Brian and Dorothy who are travelling to Switzerland for an assisted suicide. During this story, their faith in God, their decision to opt for assisted suicide and their love for each other are all tested. The third narrative relates to brother and sister John and Susan. John was born as a “saviour sibling” for Susan and his cells were used to save his sister’s life. We watch as the pair sift through their past and attempt to resolve their differences.

The event will include a wine reception and a post-show discussion on the issues raised with members of the artistic team and an experts in bioethical issues, Dr. David Walsh (Director of Sims IVF Clinic) and Dr. Kevin Mitchell (Senior Lecturer in Genetics at Trinity College Dublin).

IMPROBABLE FREQUENCY A musical like no other.

Arthur Riordan’s hilarious comedy follows the exploits of British codebreaker Tristram Faraday’s (Peter Hanly) secret mission to 1941 Dublin to investigate suspicious radio broadcasts. Before long, he is drawn into a morass of intrigue and deception that involves overthrowing the British, undermining the Nationalists and subverting the forces of nature.

There are improbable encounters with the likes of John Betjeman (Rory Nolan) the English Poet moonlighting as a spy; Erwin Schrodinger (with umlats on the o)the lascivious Austrian Nobel Prize physicist, (Brian Doherty); Myles na gCopaleen, the surreal Irish Times satirist (Darragh Kelly); and Agent Green, and old flame of Tristram’s and fellow spy and crossword enthusiast (Cathy White). In order to avert disaster and perhaps impress the lovely Philomena (Stephanie McKeon), Tristram will have to draw on his uncanny ability to solve crossword puzzles and his.. well, that’s pretty much all he can draw on actually.

Directed by Rough Magic’s Lynne Parker, Riordan’s witty script is transported by Bell Hellicopter’s whimsical original score and stellar musicians – Ellen Cranitch, Conor Sheil, Des Lacey and Cathal Synnott.
