The Robert Boyle Science Festival is a week-long festival to promote science throughout the southeast of Ireland.

Known previously as the South East Science Festival, it is now being branded as the Robert Boyle Science Festival, in honour of Waterford-born Robert Boyle. The festival has been taking place for over 10 years and has brought science events to tens of thousands of school pupils, families and the general public. Over 50 events take place throughout the week bringing international and national presenters to provide fun science events, presentations, workshops, serious science discussions and debates for adult audiences.

This festival is coordinated by Calmast, Waterford Institute of Technology’s award winning STEM outreach centre.

July 13th to 15th at Synge Theatre, TCD

THE FESTIVAL - Screenings, Talks, Panel-led Discussions

The Festival includes the screening of 32 of the best television and New Media productions involving science from across Europe, and two keynote talks and panel-led discussions. There are prizes for productions in three TV genres – Documentary, Drama and General Programmes – and a New Media category. Four further prizes reflect science in society issues; the environment, women in science, a young jury award and the choice of the theatre audience. So everyone visiting the festival can participate. And free coffee and biscuits are provided in the intervals.

Key issues in presenting science on television and new media will surface via the two talks and discussion sessions. On 13 July, the theme is “Making the Invisible Visible”, where particle physics, the environment and drama will be the topics. The keynote speaker is the producer of the BBC documentary “the Hunt for the Higgs Boson”, the ultimate in communicating about the invisible. Environmental issues are also often not visible and present one of the key communication issues. Another communication option is via drama. Encouraging largely arts based TV drama people to take on board science themes is at the heart of a successful German project.

The second session on 14 July addresses the ever changing scene in New Media. The keynote speaker is the Director of the European Science Foundation, and the panel represent three very different projects. A state of the art IPad application of a broadcast documentary from the Netherlands illustrates the potential of this medium. A leading member of a Dublin based production company will describe their latest interactive drama and social media applications. And reflecting the cross-cultural nature of the festival, we’ll hear from a scientist at Trinity College on how she uses audio-visual new media to further her research.

Hacking has always been associated with innovative appropriations of existing resources, re-engineering, working below the radar, and modifying structures to reap new benefits. This is the approach for Interactivos?’12 Dublin, which will involve Medialab Prado and Science Gallery working together to set up an experimental production laboratory to channel hacker culture, and allow artists, designers, makers, doers, data nerds, hobbyists, citizen scientists, tech geeks, activists, edgy engineers and DIY urban planners to take control over the resolution of problems that affect urban communities in Dublin and worldwide.

Interactivos?’12 Dublin will move citizen science out of the garage/prototype stage and onto the street. Over 17 days, participants will collectively develop creative interventions and responses in relation to themes complementary to Science Gallery’s IDEALAB, including open data services, wellbeing and crowdsourcing public data.

Workshops and trails July 5th-8th ...

The Festival will bring you on an Irish Animation Trail throughout 3 cinemas at IFI to raise young people’s awareness of the process of animation itself, encouraging them to ask questions such as: How is it done? Who are the animators? What technology do they use? The trail will offer the young participants a discovery map to Irish animation which they can access at different points over the weekend. This trail will be complemented by animation feature films, including the new title Moon Man from Schesch Film Production & Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon, and workshops.

Sci-fi hands-on workshops: participants will explore sci-fi and create their own pop-ups around sci-fi scenes.

Sci-fi gadgets: model making of sci-fi gadgets: How do they work? What do they do? Creating own gadgets.
